In Vietnam, where the Kinh ethnic group makes up 87% of the population, ethnic minority communities often struggle to preserve their unique cultural heritage. They also face multiple economic disadvantages due to limited local job opportunities and societal marginalisation, with women more negatively impacted.
Hong Tang has a solution to support women from ethnic minority communities which prioritises both economic empowerment and cultural preservation. She plans to provide skills training to make traditional handicrafts that are market quality, and then provide market access for disadvantaged women in Quang Nam, Ha Giang, Yen Bai, and Hue provinces. This dual-focus approach not only provides a path to a stable income for women but also serves as a platform for preserving their ethnic traditions.
Funding this project will enable Hong to train 30 women in one village to hone their traditional cultural skills in handicrafts and assist them in selling their goods in local and national markets around Vietnam. Hong’s extensive networks in tourism and retail provide a solid commercial base from which to start selling their products, ensuring the women’s success.

Hong started the first and largest support group for single mothers in Vietnam with over 30,000 members. After becoming unexpectedly pregnant and then single over 10 years ago, Hong learnt firsthand about the stigma single mothers in Vietnam face, and she refused to put up with it. Hong provides shelter, skills-training, counselling, maternity support, and does everything she can to provide single mothers in Vietnam with what they need to become independent. More than 200,000 women and children are better off now because of her important work. Hong has also extended her services to ensure women from ethnic minorities receive equal access to care and support. Learn more.
