Twenty-one million Bangladeshis lack access to clean drinking water. Despite the abundance of water, it is often heavily contaminated. Those who have no alternative but to drink this water regularly suffer from waterborne diseases. In the extremely remote hill tracts of Bangladesh, accessing safe drinking water poses a tremendous challenge due to the mountainous terrain. With surface water and rain being unpredictable throughout the year, indigenous families struggle daily with water access. Many people are forced to walk for miles over several hours to collect drinking water for their families and carry it home.

Building a well in this challenging terrain is expensive because aquifer and groundwater sources are located 250-300 meters below ground level.

The beautiful Bandarban area where water is scarce.

To address the water access challenge in the hill tracts, Shah and his team of water experts aim to drill a community water point below 250 meters underground, powering it with solar energy to create a reliable water source for the indigenous communities of Gungguru Para Village in Bandarban.

A reliable solar-powered water source will not only ensure water for more than 2,000 people but also improve their health. Additionally, it will save time and energy, allowing them to invest in other economic activities instead of spending hours collecting water from long distances.
