In Kenya, one in two people live in water scarcity, meaning they don’t have access to clean drinking water. 70% of the country’s land is arid and prone to extreme droughts. A lot of the population relies on land and livestock for subsistence and generating an income, so during drought periods they struggle to grow food, earn a living and access clean water.

Local leader, Beth Koigi, has designed an innovative and award-winning solution to these issues, that creates drinkable water using hydrogen from the air. The system, called Majik Water, uses dehumidification techniques optimised to condense water from air using solar power.

Beth has developed three sizes of Majik Water for use by communities, schools and large rural family groups, which are able to harvest 500L, 120L and 25L per day respectively.

Access to the system can provide people living in drought prone regions with water safe for drinking, growing food and even generating an income through aquaponic farming techniques.

The device – which won first prize this year at the EDF Africa awards – could provide a solution for the 1.8 billion people predicted to have a shortage of water by 2025, according to the UN
